Expose corrupt officials and make some money - Nigerian Government

Authorities in Nigeria have approved a new policy on whistle blowing aimed to encourage Nigerians to report financial and other related crimes to relevant authorities.

With the new policy, whistleblowers whose revelations lead to recovery of money will be entitled to as much as 5 per cent of the recovered sum.

The new policy was approved on Wednesday at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council , chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari inside at the Aso Rock Villa.

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who announced the new policy said it is being put in place “in conjunction with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice”.

She said the policy is a stop gap initiative until the National Assembly formally passes it into law.

According to her, the new programme will encourage Nigerians with information on financial crimes to disclose it and also help to strengthen the fight against corruption in the country.

In September, Buhari’s administration launched “Change Begins With Me,” a “re-orientation” campaign with the simple but ambitious goal of getting the Nigerian public to change their behavior in the streets, the office and at home.

“The long-cherished and time honored, time-tested virtues of honesty, integrity, hard work, punctuality, good neighborliness, abhorrence of corruption and patriotism, have given way in the main to dishonesty, indolence, unbridled corruption and widespread impunity,” Buhari said in a speech inaugurating the campaign,” Buhari said.

Nigerians had insisted on a crack down on the country’s long-running corruption problem when they elected Buhari last year, but his insistence that Nigerians themselves are part of the problem has split his supporters.
